Spring is in full swing (and summer isn’t too far away) which means it’s the perfect time for me to review some lipsticks that were made for this season! Enter the Maybelline Color Sensational Rebel Bloom lipsticks.
I haven’t reviewed any drugstore brands (save NYX) since my 30 day challenge so I was doubly excited to jump on these Maybelline lipsticks and see how I liked them. Out of all the drugstore lipsticks, Maybelline has always been the best. I have tons of them. I need to get around to reviewing those as well. And I will! But for now, let’s focus on these.
The line is made up of “10 vivacious shades” that “take fresh picked pastels to a new bright.” At least, that’s what the Maybelline site says. It also has honey nectar in it. Which…sure, ok. Y’all have heard me fuss about useless ingredients that usually serve more as buzzwords than as necessary components of a formula, so I’ll spare you more ranting. Let’s see how they perform…
Right off the bat, these were way more sheer than I expected. The Maybelline site boasts “super-saturated pigments” and…maybe that doesn’t explicitly mean opaque…but it should mean that. When I think strong pigmentation, I think opaque, not sheer. Here’s where it gets interesting: I forgive them. These are beautiful lipsticks. Even though the color is more sheer than I’d hoped, it still delivers a gorgeous wash of color. The formula is incredibly creamy and even hydrating (the honey nectar perhaps?!?!) which makes it easy to build up. It feels like a balm on the lips and only when it’s really built up does it start to feel greasy.
Because of the formula, this isn’t going to last you all day. And it certainly won’t last through a meal. But it does leave behind a very soft stain. And the formula is so creamy, you won’t mind touching it up throughout the day. It’s the perfect formula for a sunny Spring/Summer day. It’s what you’d wear to a pool party or a BBQ or a picnic!
Out of the 10 shades I only got 3 (for now). Let’s break down the swatches then I’ll add some final thoughts.
1. Maybelline Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick in “Blushing Bud”: This was the shade I liked the least. The formula struggled to make such a pale color look good. My natural lip color kept peeking through, which made me want to layer up more and more, which made the formula build up in a gross way. The color on its own is actually very pretty, though. It’s a very cool toned, pale pink that just screams Spring. I don’t think I’ll abandon this one just yet. I rarely find a pale pink I like, so it’s worth the extra effort of making it work for me.
2. Maybelline Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick in “Orchid Ecstasy”: Dammit I love this one. It’s a purple-pink that just makes the most of the sheer formula. I’d highly recommend this one for somebody who wants to try purple lipsticks for the first time. Often times, purple lipsticks can be serious business. This is the first time I’ve seen a purple lipstick look playful. I already know this will be one of my go to Summer lipstick!
3. Maybelline Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick in “Rose Rush”: Y’all know I love me a red-orange lipstick. I live for them. And this one is sooo good! I love it. Same as “Orchid Ecstasy,” the formula takes a usually intimidating color and turns it into something lighter, softer, and less serious. The orange lean was just slight enough that I didn’t look like a crazy clown and the slight pink undertones made it feel even more laid back. This will also be one of my go to Summer lipsticks!
I’m excited to try some other colors in this line. Unfortunately, the shades I didn’t get all look a bit on the boring side (I think I got the 2 most vibrant) but I might need to give them another look. I think y’all should definitely check these out! They’re hydrating, colorful, and best of all they’re cheap. They’re around $7 each wherever Maybelline is sold BUT they’re buy one get one free on Ulta right now. GET ON IT!
