I absolutely love NYX Matte Lipsticks.
They are, hands down, one of the best lipsticks on the market. Period. The finish is a soft matte that isn’t chalky or drying. The pigmentation is bold and beautiful. The wear time is solid. The formula is easy to apply. If I had to think of one bad thing to say about them, it would have to be that the packaging looks a little cheap. But snap out of it! These are gorgeous and they’re only $5.99! COME ON!
I will say that the performance varies slightly depending on color, so let’s break it down. Here’s what I picked up:
NYX Matte Lipstick in “Sierra”: This color is a gorgeous reddish brown. Think like, terra cotta. The red lean is a little too noticeable to consider this a true nude or MLBB shade, but it is very simple and chic. Definitely a very neutral color. The formula works perfectly with this shade and the matte finish helps make everything about the look more soft. I feel like, with the red tone, a glossier finish would look odd. So this is a winner!
NYX Matte Lipstick in “Street Cred”: I had no idea how this color would turn out (after all the swatches, I’ll get into my issue with NYX color previews). It’s a very bright, warm pink. I personally prefer blue leaning pinks as opposed to yellow leaning ones, but it’s still a pretty shade. I felt this one didn’t work 100% perfectly with the matte formula. It had very, very slight pigment issues. You can kind of see in the swatch how there are patches where my natural lip color peeks through.
NYX Matte Lipstick in “Eden”: Mmm, this color. Look at how perfect it is! Eden is a beautifully bright, blue leaning red. Everything about this is stellar. The color, the formula, the finish, it’s all perfect. I can’t imagine how this won’t end up on everybody’s “best reds” list. I want to leave my husband and run away with this lipstick. Or, I guess we could just invite it into our marriage? I’ll run it past him.
NYX Matte Lipstick in “Alabama”: Hot damn, it just keeps getting better! It’s beautiful! EEEE! Alabama is a brick red lipstick done right. Again, this one is excellent across the board. I wonder if my marriage can fit a fourth…
NYX Matte Lipstick in “Siren”: This one is a great deep violet. NYX has never been afraid to go dark, and the result is not always fantastic. But here, it’s pretty great. I had a small issue with streaks forming, but it wasn’t bad enough to be a deal breaker. For the price, this is a hell of a vamp lipstick. I prefer my dark lipstick to be more red than purple, so it probably won’t be the first one I reach for. It also has a purple…I don’t want to say shimmer….sheen? It’s very subtle, but it’s there. I didn’t expect that with a matte lipstick. It’s still a great lipstick though!
I want to talk a bit about how hard it is to get an idea for color with the previews that NYX gives. They are always terrible. An easy rule of thumb (for me) is that what you’ll get is almost always lighter and brighter than what is pictured. Almost. Here’s an example:
Those are the color previews of “Eden” from the NYX website and the Ulta Website. Compare that to the bright lip swatch above and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Here’s another:
Those are both color previews of “Sierra.” They don’t even match each other!
When you click these on the site to pull up the product preview, it’ll usually reveal a color that is closer to what you get. For me, NYX is cheap enough that I’m willing to be surprised by what I actually get. For those of you that don’t want to fuck around, your best bet is to run into an Ulta and see what’s what. Or, you know, just read my blog. Probably the latter.
