Bite Beauty Lip Lab Limited Release Crème Deluxe Lipstick in “001”: A Review

JESUS that is a long title!

So, Bite Beauty is doing a neat thing where they are going to release a LE lipstick every month this year. January’s is already upon us and I am soooo happy I was able to snag one (shout out to my girl Kate for tweeting me about it). The website goes on and on about what makes this lipstick so special. Over 20 amino acids! Silk! Freshwater pearls! I have honestly never understood what any of that shit really does, but it sounds baller. They could say it has moon dust and unicorn tears in it and I really wouldn’t know the difference.

Also it comes in a fancy red box with a date-stamped sticker, so you know it’s real.

Here’s where things get interesting. It’s already getting terrible reviews. On the Sephora site it has 2/5 stars from 9 reviews. And it’s only getting worse. I tried incredibly hard not to read reviews before I tried it for myself, but I couldn’t resist. The most common complaint is that it’s awful. No but seriously, the biggest issue seems to be with the formula. Most of what I’ve read says it’s incredibly slippery and the color comes out patchy and streaky. Similar to how I felt about the Deconstructed Rose Trio.

Bite LE 001

My judgement is it’s pretty good! I didn’t have any issues with it being too slippery. It was creamy, yes, but it wasn’t melting all over the place and making a mess. Applying over primer and using a liner will definitely go a long way. The color does apply more sheer than you’d expect but I didn’t have issues with streaks or uneven color application. I tried touching up with a brush but that spread the color out unevenly, so I’d stick with applying from the tube and dabbing to touch up. The biggest issue I had was that it catches dry skin, but that’s more my fault than the lipstick’s.

The color is a very pretty burgundy with deep red undertones. The red pops the most in direct light. Indoors it comes off as a truer burgundy/raisin color, which is equally beautiful.

But, here’s the deal. I don’t see how it’s any different from their permanent Luminous Creme Lipstick line. It feels exactly the same. It looks exactly the same. Here’s an example:

Bite LE 001 Bite Scarlet

That’s “001” on the left and “Scarlet” from their holiday collection on the right. The only difference is “Scarlet” is more pigmented. Granted, since it was holiday, “Scarlet” isn’t part of the permanent collection. But the formula is permanent. And that’s supposed to be what matters here. 30 amino acids, dammit! This lipstick was $36. That’s $12 more than their permanent line. This looks and feels like their $24 lipsticks and I don’t know how anybody could argue with that.

Here’s where it gets real for me (and successful for Bite Beauty). I still want them all. I’m going to order every single one of these things. Mostly because I’m the Pokemon master of lipsticks and I very seriously need to catch ’em all. But also because a part of me thinks they’ll get it right at some point this year. Dark shades can be tricky. Maybe this wasn’t the best color to showcase the limited edition deluxe formula. Maybe I’m a little too forgiving.

Either way, can’t wait for February’s shade.

Friendly reminder! I have finally buckled down and created a Facebook page for the blog! Right now, my number one method of sharing my blog is through Reddit. I will absolutely continue to share my lip swatches with the community at /r/makeupaddiction. That’s what got me into blogging in the first place! The issue with posting on that subreddit is I cannot directly link to my blog. I completely get their reasons for that, and I always make sure my posts there are about swatches first and my blog second.

The Facebook page allows me to post about the blog in a way that gets it to people directly. I tend to post on reddit first thing in the morning, so following the Facebook page gets you the posts as they’re completed (instead of waiting an extra day). It also makes it easier for you to share the page, and specific posts, with your friends. They might then share it with their friends. And so on and so forth! I’m working on finding a “like” button that I like (hehe) but in the meantime you may have noticed one at the top of the post. It’s fully functional so have at it. Or, you can click right here to give it a look and a like! Everything I post on that page will be blog related. I promise it will be top notch stuff that you won’t hate.

It would really mean a ton if you liked the page. This blog is something I do entirely for the fun of it and I really just love getting to share it and talk about lipstick with people!

Thanks y’all!

  1. Woohoo, thanks so much for the review! I ordered it but still haven’t opened mine because most of the feedback from people on the interwebs has been negative so I was unsure about keeping it. From what I’ve seen so far I can gather that the colour is unique because of its undertone. Deep wine shades are often very pink whereas this one seems to have more of a true red base.

    1. Thank you for reading! I don’t necessarily regret buying it, but I was pretty disappointed. To be fair, it’s marketed as a burgundy shade (as opposed to a wine shade) so the red undertones are to be expected. And it was pretty on par with other burgundy lipsticks, like the one I compared it to in the article. Still pretty. Still worth keeping. But not really worth the price tag.
